Itinerary
Day 1:
Pick up from airport in Quito and transfer to Hotel where you can relax and recover from your late night arrival.
Day 2:
If this is your first experience of a South American city get ready for some crazy driving and blaring horns as we take you on a city tour that will focus on the old town with its very special old Spanish architecture including the governmental palace and many incredibly ornate churches. This will really help you slip into the feel of things and you will have chance to shop and we will take you out for an Ecuadorian lunch. After we return to the hotel there is time to shower and relax followed by evening meal.
Day 3:
Time for some physical exercise, about half an hour outside of the city lays the small village of Tingo which is at the base of an extinct volcano called Ilalo. We will take a packed lunch and make the climb which should take around three hours stopping to rest maybe in the pine forest about half way to the top. There are fantastic views in all directions and hopefully you will see some of the larger snow capped volcanoes and a view looking back at the city of Quito. Return to the Hotel and dinner with a good night’s rest to get ready for a travel day into the Ecuadorian rain forest.
Day 4:
Travel to the Chocolate Jungle. A scenic drive. You will cross the highest road pass in the country before descending in to the jungle town of Misahualli. You will meet the monkey troop, and from there a short canoe ride to our lodge.
Day 5:
Community volunteer day on the Chocolate plantation. Experience the chocolate growing and harvesting process, work with the locals and help in the seasonal activities. This day will also include reforestation and rejuvenation of the national cacao trees in the village
Days 6 & 7:
White Water rafting. Two day overnight tour. All camping and rafting equipment is included. (This service is provided by River People as part of our quality partner policy).
NOTE: those not wanting to take the rafting option can opt for a canoe trip and hike through local biological reserve.
Day 8:
Ongoing community project work that may include: reforestation, teaching English, river bank restoration, fungus removal from cacao trees, or working in local museum.
Day 9:
Community Development Day. Work on local projects or alternative community initiatives.
Day 10:
A visit to Amozoonico; a unique wildlife rescue center located in a rain forest preserve. What makes this ¨zoo different is that it is a working shelter and rehabilitation center. You will be able to visit and see many species of Ecuadorian wildlife. Some of these animals are being actively rehabilitated for their return to the wild.
Day 11:
A canoe ride to visit local Kichwa villages. Experience their culture, dance, shaman, traditional fishing demonstration.
Day 12:
This day is reserved as a backup day to replace activities lost to inclement weather or other technical difficulties. Otherwise it is a free day to visit Misahualli, local waterfalls and butterfly farm.
Day 13:
Early departure from Misahualli to Quito with an on route stop for lunch and experience the relaxing thermal pools. Arriving in Quito in the late afternoon.
Day 14:
Parting of the ways. We hope that you have enjoyed your experience with us. Wishing everyone the very best as you continue your South American travels or return to your home country.
