The History of Cacao

Roast cacao beans over an open fire, grind them, and make your own chocolate!

Our History of Cacao exhibit walks you through the history of the bean and shows how the trees got spread throughout South America and Mexico.

About the Exhibit

  • The display room hosts miniature structures that show the fermentation and drying processes.
  • There are old grinders for making chocolate and some artifacts from the Museum of Cacao & Chocolate in Belguim.
  • A guided walk through the plantation shows harvesting techniques.
  • Learn about the flora and medicinal plants used by generations of indigenous people.
